The new Leaf is expected to be launched at the end of this year with deliveries starting in 2025. Nissan has yet to confirm a launch date for the car.
Nissan has said the look of the new Leaf was previewed by the 2021 Chill-Out concept, which showcased an aerodynamic body shape with coupe styling and uncluttered surfaces.
The new Leaf will be the first of three new full-electric SUVs that Nissan will produce at the Sunderland factory. It will be followed by an all-electric replacement for the Juke small SUV, expected in 2025, and the next Qashqai, which is likely due around 2027.
The Leaf was initially launched by Nissan in response to Toyota’s success with the hybrid Prius, former Nissan executive Andy Palmer told the Automotive News Europe Congress in 2022. Palmer steered the development of the original Leaf during his time at Nissan as chief operating officer. He left the automaker in 2014.
The Leaf’s range was initially low at 129 miles (208 km) from a 24-kilowatt hour battery but it has improved over the years. The model is currently available with a 39 kWh battery with a range of 168 miles. A more expensive version with a larger 62 kWh battery and a range of 239 miles was discontinued last year.
