Falling prices could see half of motorists buying used

Nearly half of motorists (46%) could soon be eyeing a used car following substantial price falls, according to Startline’s latest monthly Used Car Tracker.

When told that used car prices have fallen by an average of almost 20% in the last year, 21% said that it would make them a lot more likely to buy and 25% a little, shows March’s Startline Used Car Tracker.

Paul Burgess, CEO at Startline Motor Finance, said: “Used car prices started rising quite dramatically thanks to stock shortages and high demand following the pandemic, and largely peaking sometime in early-mid 2023.

Retail used car prices fall 1.6% in January as EVs drag numbers down – Motors – Car Dealer Magazine

The prices dealers advertised their second-hand car stock at its lowest point for more than a year in January.

The latest used car market analysis shows that retail used car prices dropped by 1.6% in January – the lowest point for 15 months.

The fall in retail prices was seen across the Motors network and came at a time when trade valuations for used cars had begun to firm up.

Used car prices tumble 7% in 2023, although still elevated compared to pre-pandemic

Used car prices tumbled 7.0% in 2023, the second year in a row of falling prices in the sector after a massive pandemic-era run-up.

The Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index (MUVVI), which tracks used vehicle prices paid at wholesale auctions on a seasonally adjusted basis in the US, ended the month of December down 0.5% compared to November. For the year, used prices fell 7.0% compared to a year ago to a 204.0 reading, and are now down 21% compared to December of 2021.
