Retail used car prices fall 1.6% in January as EVs drag numbers down – Motors – Car Dealer Magazine

The prices dealers advertised their second-hand car stock at its lowest point for more than a year in January.

The latest used car market analysis shows that retail used car prices dropped by 1.6% in January – the lowest point for 15 months.

The fall in retail prices was seen across the Motors network and came at a time when trade valuations for used cars had begun to firm up.

Cap HPI director of valuations Derren Martin told Car Dealer (video above) earlier this week that prices had dropped just 0.1% in the trade in January.

Seat has topped the fastest selling used cars list with its Leon hatchback taking just 10 days on average to fly off forecourts.

The petrol plug-in hybrid version of the Spanish hatchback sold an average of 16 days faster than the national average of 26 days for used cars.

The latest data from Auto Trader also reveals the slowest selling car of the year so far is the Lexus RX, taking an average of 103 days to find a new home.

Dealers expect used car values to fall in 2024

More than eight out of 10 used car dealers (84%) anticipate a decline in used car prices and values this year, according to Startline research.

The March Startline Used Car Tracker suggests 20% think the rate of the price fall will accelerate, 28% believe it will continue at the current speed and 36% think the price drop will be less severe.

Paul Burgess, CEO at Startline Motor Finance, said: “Over the last year, used car prices and values have fallen by about a fifth caused by factors such as gradually increasing stock supply and reduced consumer demand.
